Byzantium

The frescoes of Church of St Savior-in-Chora are probably the most important works of Byzantine art existing today, in terms of beauty and quantity. These frescoes were painted at the same time as those of Giotto in Italy, and they appear to have the same vitality. These frescoes are fluid, and are quite different from the rather iconic rigid Byzantine representations. The colors of these fresoes are still splendid, and appear to be almost as if they were paintings. (Press here for 35K jpg) The superb fresoes date from 1320, and are anonymous. The frescoes deal with the themes of death and resurrection.(Press here for 51K jpg)
